R. Brian Borla

Career Overview

Brian Borla is a partner at HCP, where his practice focuses on civil litigation, including construction defect, personal injury, employment law, and environmental and product liability matters. Since joining the firm in 2003, Brian has established himself as a trusted advisor to clients facing complex and high-exposure disputes. He provides rapid “first response” services for clients confronted with potential catastrophic liability or property claims—coordinating expert retention, directing scene preservation, and conducting key witness interviews to mitigate risk and preserve subrogation opportunities.

In addition to his civil litigation work, Brian is an integral member of HCP’s environmental and product liability team, representing clients in toxic tort matters on both local and national levels. He collaborates with a nationwide network of defense experts, including immunologists and industrial hygienists, to develop effective, evidence-based strategies that achieve favorable results for his clients.

Brian also advises employers on workplace compliance and employment law issues, including FMLA and ADA matters, hiring and termination decisions, and accommodation requests. Known for his accessibility and practical guidance, Brian provides ongoing fractional general counsel services to clients through a monthly, flat-fee arrangement. This structure allows clients to better manage legal costs while maintaining a consistent relationship with counsel who understands their operations and objectives.

Before beginning his legal career, Brian spent eight years with Westfield Insurance Company, where he worked in claims handling and subrogation. His experience as a former claims handler and supervisor provides him with unique insight into the needs and challenges faced by insurance professionals. He regularly advises insurance clients on coverage interpretation and bad faith claims and has extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, having served as both a neutral and an advocate before the American Arbitration Association.

Brian earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Akron School of Law, where he contributed to the Akron Law Review. He received his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University.

Brian and his wife, Michelle, live in Medina, Ohio.  Brian and Michelle are recent empty-nesters to their three children and enjoy spending time playing pickleball and spoiling their three dogs.
